These are a selection of
double page spreads that will give us an idea of how to layout our double page
spread. The examples are different, as they don’t have the same contrast in
colours. The Eminem spread has chosen to have a dark background with white
writing so that the image and words stand out a bit more. However the Nicki
Minaj spread has gone for a coloured background making the page itself more
appealing. The other double page spreads
have a white background with bold colours as the writing. Each one has an image
on one side of the spread. The writing has been spread out on the other side of
the page. The layout is different on each double page spread; I prefer the
layout of the Eminem spread. The writing is kept in sections and I like how the
dark background compliments the white writing.Friday, 6 December 2013

Target Audience- Genre, Age and Sex
Gender- Male, Female
My Documentary will be made for both males and females to watch. I will not aim it at either sex because i feel my documentary can be benefited by both sex. I have had a look on the internet at some statistics and out of males and females, males enjoy watching documentaries more than females do. I feel with my choice of documentary it will appeal more to females as it is about dancing.
Age
My documentary will be suitable for children of all ages as i have found the definitions of the age barriers and my documentary is appropriate for all ages. However i feel that the documentary will appeal more to 16-30 year olds as i received this information from my questionnaire. My documentary will be marked as a 'U' for universal as my documentary is suitable for all ages. I don't think children would be interested in the dancing documentary however it is suitable for them to watch if they are interested in dancing.

Interview Scripts
Main Girl
How long have you been dancing?
I have been dancing for 8 years now. I started dancing when i was in year 5 because my teacher was doing an after school club for Latin American dancing. As soon as i started i fell in love with it, she requested that i should go to the dance school where she learnt when she was younger. The diamond dance centre.
How did it feel to go from your after school club to a proper dance school?
It was amazing, the atmosphere was incredible. I was welcomed into the school straight away and i made friends in no time at all. Also the dancing was more intense, the teachers were more strict than at my school.
What do you like so much about dancing?
I love the family feel of our dance school. We all look out for each other and we are all friends for life. I also love the theatrical side of it, all the make up and dresses. I really like when we go to the Nationwide Finals in Blackpool and we all come together and everyone puts their differences aside. We all cheer each other and out school spirit is amazing.
Grace & Emily
How long have you been dancing together?
2 Years now, we became dance partners at the beginning of the year, we were going to take it as an easy, fun year but then we realized we were really good together so we worked for it then came 1st in the Nationwide finals out of 50 couples!
How long have you been dancing for?
Grace: Since i was 3 so 15 years!! Wow i didn't realize it was that long!
How long have you been friends?
We have been friends for 9 years and were just as close now as we were back then, all them years ago.
How did you become friends?
We became friends through dancing. We started young and became friends at a young age, i suppose we've stayed this close because of dancing as well.
Why are there 2 girls dancing together and does it make dancing harder in competitions?
There are a lot of all girl partnerships because there aren't enough boys to go around so the girls go together. In competitions normally the boy-girl couples do better as its more appealing to the eye and it looks better, but then some all girl couples are really good and manage to beat them!
The teachers
Sarah - How does it make you feel when you see one of your lessons make a final or win?
Luke - Why did you want to start teaching dance?
Kyle- Is it easy to look at someone and know what to work on first?
Cara- What doe dancing mean to you?
Question for all- What do you love most about dancing and our dance school?
Head of the dance school
How long have you been dancing?
How long have you been running the dance school?
Is it stressful to run a dance school?
What would you say is the hardest part?
Is it all worth it at the end of the year when we all go to finals?
What do you love most about our dance school ?

Questionaire Conclusion
Looking at the results for each question i have came up with a specific target audience for our dancing documentary. The gender i will be aiming at will be mainly female, as the majority of people who answered my questionnaire were female. I will also be aiming it at 16-20 year olds as a lot of them were in the age group. As well as this the majority of people who took part in my questionnaire classed themselves as a dancer. Over half of the people decided that they would like to watch a dancing documentary, which is a good result. Only 5 people said that they do not like dancing/watching dancing, which overall is a good result. The questionnaire gave them a choice as to what dance they would prefer out of lively and calm. The results were split as there was 13 people that enjoyed lively and 12 people that enjoyed calm. From the results i found that only 4 people thought that the documentary would not be popular. 16 out of 25 people said that dancing was not a physical sport. 5 out of 7 people said they would not consider taking up dancing which isn't a problem as the documentary is going to be aimed at dancers so that it would relate to them. The BBC was the channel that got the most votes which is good as BBC show a lot of documentaries.

Storyboard Ideas
- A girl coming walking out of college with her group of friends (wide, pan, zoom shots)
- The girl gets home and picks up her bag as well as her dance shoes. (zoom in shots)
The above scenes are in black and white, however the shoes are the only thing in colour to emphasise them.
- The girl walks into her dance school (music blaring) shows she's walking into a different world(following shot) (colour begins to come back)
Voice over begins to come in and says how life is at college and how life is at dancing
- The girl begins to dance, showing off her talent.(wide shot, zooms in to shoes)
- Moves away from her dancing and interviews the girl, she says how she got into dancing, why she dances and why she loves it.(medium close up shot, blur shot of people in the background)
During interview their is people dancing in the background
- Interview two other girls and ask the same questions.(medium close up shot)
Have a shot of all three girls working together and dancing
- Interview the dance school's head and ask how she got into dancing and what its like to run a dance school.(medium close up shot)
- Interview some of the teachers in a group and ask what it's like to teach people and see them develop into brilliant dancers.(wide shot)
- Goes back to the main girl and she says how dancing has changed her life and how dancing makes her happy.(medium close up shot)
First dance competition footage of the main girl.
Last medal clip of the main girl.
She speaks about the main improvements and how she's developed
- Photo montage with music(zooming in and out of some photos, add effects)
Having a group interview of some of the girls talking about comps, show footage of them getting ready for one. (camera stays in the same place, the girls walk around as usual as if the camera is not there.
- Close up of the dance shoes going back into the bag.(close up shot, following shot)
- Goes back to the girl leaving the dance school and looking like a normal girl again.(following shot, ends with a black screen).
Questionnaire Result - If you do not dance would you consider taking up dancing?
I'm happy with this result as i had a feeling that the people who said that they would not find the dancing documentary interesting were non-dancers and wouldn't like to dance. I was right as 5 out of 7 people said that they would not consider taking up dancing if they were given the opportunity. Some of the reasons included that they have no rhythm or that they just aren't interested in dancing.

Questionnaire Result - Would you class dancing as a physical sport?
The question of whether dancing should be classed as a physical sport had a negative outcome. 16 out of 25 people who took part said that dancing is not a physical sport. The majority of these people also said that dancing is a hobby therefore its not a sport. They also think that dancers aren't using as much energy as someone on a football/rugby pitch.
Questionnaire Result - Would you be interested in watching a dancing documentary?
19 out of 25 people said they would be interested in watching a documentary. The other 6 didn't like the idea. However i like how they have been truthful and still have taken part in the questionnaire. Im glad that the majority of people that did take part in the questionnaire would be interested in watching the dancing documentary.
Questionnaire Result - Are you a dancer?
18 out of 25 people classed themselves as a dancer. I know dancers would be more interested in watching a dancing documentary, however i think that having people that aren't dancers would be good too as they might be interested in taking up dancing. The people that said they were dancers should know a lot about dancing, so might see the documentary from a different aspect. They might have the same story as the main girl does. The non-dancers will be watching something they wouldn't know a lot about but it may still interest them.
Questionnaire Result - How old are you?
After handing the questionnaire out i found that the majority of people i asked were between 16-20 and 26-30. This gives me a wide range of people that would be interested in the documentary and a much bigger target audience. I feel that the outcome was what i wanted as i knew not many 5-10 year olds would not be interested in watching a dancing documentary. The 16-20 year olds would be my main target audience as dancing is popular in this age group.
Questionnaire Result- What Gender are you?
The majority of people that took part in my questionnaire was female. There was 17 female and 8 male. I found that men were not as interested in a dancing documentary than women were. Before i handed out the questionnaire i had an idea that women would be more interested in dancing as it is commonly known as a female hobby. When handing out the questionnaire's men read it and decided to give it back instead of filling it out.

Documentary Analysis 5 and 6
http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p004tml7
The documentary starts with some music playing and an old couple talking about how they first met. It shows the couple as if they are in a photo frame. At the bottom of the photo frame there is writing saying how long they have been married. The song is then used to fill in the gap when they are showing old pictures of the couples when they were young. I think this is a nice touch to the documentary. It gives you an insight into how they met and grew up together. I like this documentary as it shows how the old people fell in love when they were young and are still going strong when they are getting old.

I found Christmas with Dad compelling but rather sad-- it seems to me that more education would help the 'Dad' in such circumstances. The filmmaker might agree that a happier future appears unlikely. A beautifully structured film, and thought-provoking.
Documentary Analysis 3 and 4
http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p008yyfg
The way the documentary starts with the main operation and the voiceover throws you straight into what the documentary is about. I don't really like how they have done this as i feel it gives away straight away what you are about to watch. However i like how the writing appears explaining about the implant, making you more aware. I like how they have added in what the little boy can hear once he has been given the implant. Showing the difference between a child being given the chance to have the implant and a child that isn't 'allowed' to have one. It shows different deaf peoples lives and how simliar and different they are which i think is good. In the documentary its demonstrated how a deaf person could be described as underwater and in the deaf community. When someone is given the implant they are then able to come out of the water and enter the hearing community. I feel that this is an effective part of the documentary.

Well made with fine shots and editing. While it is about boats and people who love boats, it has evocative connotations - salvaging and restoring our own personal history; unemployment, value, the countryside - and more - that should make it of interest to everyone. 5 stars. Excellent documentary, seamless between watching and the 'obsessive' enthusiasts.
Documentary Analysis 1 and 2
http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p00fqktp
The documentary starts with an eerie scene making you wonder about what it is going to be about. A sound effect is played at the beginning making it sound scary. I like how the voiceover comes in over the top of the sound effects. The words that fade in the are very effective and i like how the title also fades in. There is a lot of clips of the scenery with a voiceover over the top. They then bring in a clip of the person they are interviewing i think this is effective. Music is played when no one is talking, filling in the empty gap. The clips of them spray painting shows what the documentary is about and shows how they are trying to improve the site. I feel that showing clips of them spray painting and having a voiceover over the top is a good idea and i would like to use these as some possible ideas for my documentary.

This was a good documentary with good shots. Nevertheless, I thought it was well filmed and a good subject matter. I liked this and laughed at the ballroom dancers doing the classic POV dance partner thing. I liked the way things were overlapped, sound and image, worked well, especially the guy who hates sundays ranting about an abyss during more shots of the ballroom dancers.
