In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The main production uses the conventions of real media texts such as narrative as we have used a voiceover throughout the documentary to tell the story of the girl. The introduction starts slowly and shows the young teenage girl at college, it shows how she has a normal day and then it progresses into her dancing. Images that are used throughout the documentary are of the girl dancing and walking through college. During interviews with the main girl and whilst she is in competitions her make-up varies. When Megan is in an interview her make-up is minimal and looks completely different to when she is at a dance competition, therefore showing how much effort she is making for the competition. The lighting varies throughout the documentary; it goes from light to dark in many stages. There are three actors, the main teenage girl, her friend and her dance partner. All three actors are dressed casually at first but when footage is played from the dance competition, the two dancers are shown in a different light. Both are looking smart and well dressed in their bright red dresses. At the end of the documentary we have included end credits to show who has participated.
The first subsidiary task uses the conventions of real media texts by using the correct content. On the double page spread there includes a heading, two images and text. The text is basically a short description about what the documentary is going to be about and gives you a small insight as to what you will be watching. However it does not give away too much detail. The layout is simple, one image is placed on the left and all of the text is kept to the right. The other image is placed in amongst the text to the right of the page. The image on the left takes up the whole of one page. The other image is small enough to fit next to the text to show more of the dancers that Megan practices with. Colour's that are used are red and black, the heading is red and the text is black. The main image to the left shows the main girl who is featured in the documentary, the image is in full colour and no editing took place. The two girls are in bright red dresses in the images and they stand out on the page. The lighting lights up their dresses and shows how they are ready for a competition due to being dressed up and wearing a lot of make-up.
The second subsidiary task uses the conventions of real media texts by using a normal layout. The newspaper advert has the image taking up the whole page. The girls and background is in black and white however the girls dresses are in colour. The dresses and their lips have been edited to show the colour whilst the rest of the image is still in black and white. I feel this shows the importance of the dresses and shows that they are dancers. The title is placed at the bottom of the page in white font, it has spread across the width of the page and is the biggest piece of text on the page to show how it is the title. The small piece of text at the top of the page gives a small description as to when the documentary will be shown on tele.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The documentary combines with both the double page spread and newspaper advert as they all show the same message. The two ancillary texts link in with the main product by showing footage and images from the same dance competition, showing that they all link together. Similarities between the Double page spread and the Newspaper advert include the image. However the image is different as the girls are standing in a different position. The two images however are from the same day and from one of their dance competitions. Therefore both of the girls are dressed up smartly and appropriately for the competition. Another similarity would be that the title on each ancillary text is in the same font however they are in different colour's. Using the same font for the title gives them a link and make the title stand out. The documentary links to both as the main girl is on each ancillary text and also features in the documentary. The target audience would be aimed at both gender as nowadays men are as much into dancing as women are. Looking at statistics from the internet men are more interested in documentaries however it will be made for both male and female. The combination of our documentary and the two ancillary texts are effective as they are combined through different ways. I think it is good that they all link as it shows that the two ancillary texts have been designed to promote the documentary which is the main product.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

The target audience we have decided to aim at are both genders however i will aim it mainly at females due to the fact women are more interested in dancing than men. Men are starting to get more into dancing and looking at statistics men are more interested in watching documentaries. We have attempted to target the audience we have chosen to aim at by using girly fonts on the two ancillary texts. The documentary also has mellow and country music to go throughout the documentary. I have made a questionnaire which has been filled out to see what the majority of people would like to see in a documentary. I believe that the strongest element of the project would be the Double Page spread. This is because the page gives away slight detail about the documentary itself. The images are from the main girls dance competition and it also links in very well with the main documentary as the footage has been taken at the same time as the images. I feel that the weakest element of the three would be the documentary itself due to the fact that more could of been added to make it a little bit more professional. However the documentary is still good it could just of had a few more improvements. I think the majority of people would agree with me and would want to change the documentary slightly by adding more interviews with the main girl Megan and having more footage from the dance competition. According to my questionnaire people voted that the documentary itself would be best off being put on BBC one. I agreed with this as the BBC are always showing documentaries and they are also a well known channel. I feel that the two ancillary texts would be shown in TV magazines and Newspapers such as 'The Sun' or 'The Mirror' as these are also two well known newspapers across the country.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

The hardware that was involved in making the documentary was a Sony Video Camera. I had to learn how to use this as i have never used a video camera before. I used zoom and panning to follow Megan around the hall whilst she was dancing. This became slightly tricky at the competition as there was a lot of people in the hall, dancing and sitting down watching. I have learnt that the video cameras do not go extremely blurry when zoomed in fully and that they do not jog that much once put onto a tripod. I attempted to use the video camera to take the ancillary images however i did not feel that the images were clear enough. Instead i decided to use an Apple iPhone to take the images as they have a good quality camera and the images turned out just how i wanted them to. The software i used to edit the images was Adobe Photoshop. I edited the dresses for the Newspaper Advert image by converting the image into black and white and bringing the colour out on only the dresses and the girls lips. I used InDesign to create the double page spread as it sets the page out perfectly and i find it easy to use. I also used Photoshop to create the Newspaper Advert

Double Page Spread Analysis

These are a selection of double page spreads that will give us an idea of how to layout our double page spread. The examples are different, as they don’t have the same contrast in colours. The Eminem spread has chosen to have a dark background with white writing so that the image and words stand out a bit more. However the Nicki Minaj spread has gone for a coloured background making the page itself more appealing.  The other double page spreads have a white background with bold colours as the writing. Each one has an image on one side of the spread. The writing has been spread out on the other side of the page. The layout is different on each double page spread; I prefer the layout of the Eminem spread. The writing is kept in sections and I like how the dark background compliments the white writing.

Target Audience- Genre, Age and Sex

Gender- Male, Female
My Documentary will be made for both males and females to watch. I will not aim it at either sex because i feel my documentary can be benefited by both sex. I  have had a look on the internet at some statistics and out of males and females, males enjoy watching documentaries more than females do. I feel with my choice of documentary it will appeal more to females as it is about dancing.

Age
My documentary will be suitable for children of all ages as i have found the definitions of the age barriers and my documentary is appropriate for all ages. However i feel that the documentary will appeal more to 16-30 year olds as i received this information from my questionnaire. My documentary will be marked as a 'U' for universal as my documentary is suitable for all ages. I don't think children would be interested in the dancing documentary however it is suitable for them to watch if they are interested in dancing.

Interview Scripts

Main Girl

How long have you been dancing?
I have been dancing for 8 years now. I started dancing when i was in year 5 because my teacher was doing an after school club for Latin American dancing. As soon as i started i fell in love with it, she requested that i should go to the dance school where she learnt when she was younger. The diamond dance centre.

How did it feel to go from your after school club to a proper dance school?
It was amazing, the atmosphere was incredible. I was welcomed into the school straight away and i made friends in no time at all. Also the dancing was more intense, the teachers were more strict than at my school.

What do you like so much about dancing?
I love the family feel of our dance school. We all look out for each other and we are all friends for life. I also love the theatrical side of it, all the make up and dresses. I really like when we go to the Nationwide Finals in Blackpool and we all come together and everyone puts their differences aside. We all cheer each other and out school spirit is amazing.

Grace & Emily

How long have you been dancing together?
2 Years now, we became dance partners at the beginning of the year, we were going to take it as an easy, fun year but then we realized we were really good together so we worked for it then came 1st in the Nationwide finals out of 50 couples!

How long have you been dancing for?
Grace: Since i was 3 so 15 years!! Wow i didn't realize it was that long!

How long have you been friends?
We have been friends for 9 years and were just as close now as we were back then, all them years ago.

How did you become friends?
We became friends through dancing. We started young and became friends at a young age, i suppose we've stayed this close because of dancing as well.

Why are there 2 girls dancing together and does it make dancing harder in competitions?
There are a lot of all girl partnerships because there aren't enough boys to go around so the girls go together. In competitions normally the boy-girl couples do better as its more appealing to the eye and it looks better, but then some all girl couples are really good and manage to beat them!
